Synergy is
when the interaction of two or more forces working together creates a greater
effect than the sum of their individual efforts.
Media synergy
is the way in which different elements of a media conglomerate work together to
promote linked products across different media.
Synergy works
when different elements within a media conglomerate promote linked products, each
distinct element promotes the other.

will see people wearing this and may google who it is and then find their music.
This is
also another way that the artists are gaining money from their audience.
Semiotics
is the study of signs and their meaning in society. A sign is anything that can
convey meaning.
James Arthur Website:
Image of James
Arthur (Background)- he is not smiling, creates opposition to the bright, happy
colours used in the website.
Other images
and text are covering the photo due to it being the background image the user
cannot see the full photo clearly, creates mystery.
Bastille Website:
There are
no images of bastille used in his website, for a first timer to his music this
will create mystery to them as they would want to know the face behind the
voice.
The Gif
used as the background creates an indie vibe and represents the reckless and
fun impression.
Oh Wonder Website:
The white
background and simplicity of the website brings out the purity of their voices
and talent. A simple website allows their talent to speak for itself. It really
allows the audience to listen to the meaning of their songs.

The main
colours on their website are white and black. This matches more with their
first album cover as their new one has a bit of blue in it, I can take from
this that they are keeping their websites simple and minimal.

Andrew Goodwin’s
theory states that there are 5 key aspects to a music video:
·Thought through beat (seeing what
the lyrics mean in your head)
·Relationship between the song and
visuals
·Narrative and performance of the song
·Technical aspect of a music video
·Star Image, lots of camera shots
making him/her the centre of attention.
From my
research I found that Indie pop music videos always tend to follow these 5
aspects.
My song has
slow and fast parts therefore I will include a mix of long and quick shots and
slow and fast paced editing that is appropriate with the certain parts of the
song.
In my music
video I will have a narrative as well as a live performance element due to a narrative
being rather common in indie pop music videos, it is also compulsory to have a narrative
paired with a live performance in my music video.
In my music
video I will use “star image”. I will have the artists doing a live performance
in my music video.
The relations
of visuals to the song will be illustrated this is where the meaning of the
song is made clear through the video.
Media
language will work together to create the correct meaning for my music video. The
atmosphere tone and mood can be reflected through the use of colour, speed of
editing and variety of transitions. Editing will follow the rhythm and tempo of
the song cutting to the beat. The setting will be what the audience expect from
this song this makes the video feel authentic and therefore believable.
How media institutions use digital convergence across
different platforms:
Media convergence lets audiences use one platform to
consume various types of media texts.
Popular social media sites like Twitter and Facebook
are drivers of media convergence as they allow audiences to post links to a
variety of media texts that they want to share.
We increasingly consume media texts alone in our individual
private spaces; on a home computer, tablet, personal music player or
smartphone.
Although
we consume media texts in this personalised way, our responses to media content
can be shared socially via word of mouth, internet forums and social media.
When the artists are doing a live performance I would always want them to be singing in front of a graffiti wall as well as the fairy/neon lights as this is another aesthetic look that will go well in the music video.
In my music video I want the artists doing the live performance to have some sort of face paint pattern drawn on them. The representation of this song has a worry free vibe which I envision to be a festival style. This sort of feature added also will make the target audience want to know the mystery behind the characters and artists
The female characters makeup will be natural and very minimal, this allows the audience to truly connect with them and understand their story through the emotions.
Locations of characters: River (boat), Field, Studio, home
(fort), hospital.
Location of James Arthur: Sat on sofa playing guitar in a
house.
This music video also has a very strong narrative that is
broken up with James Arthur singing and performing with his guitar. From the
music video the audience can interpret that it is about looking at the future
and spending your life with someone, even after death. It can also link to how
people find love in the most random places and that is very relatable to the
audience.
Props: Guitar, Studio equipment, Boat.
Clothing: the music video is in black and white so it is
difficult to tell the colour of the clothing but it is clear to see that the
clothing is of dark colours throughout the music video.
Woman: jumper, coat, jeans, boots.
Man: t-shirt, jacket, jeans, trainers.
James Arthur: Denim jacket, jeans, t shirt.
Camera:
Establishing shot of the characters on a boat in the middle
of a lake or river, linked with a shot of James Arthur playing his guitar on
the sofa.
There are many close up shots of James Arthur singing,
allows the audience to feel close to the artist and feel what he felt when he
wrote this song or how he feels when he performs it.
The narrative is mainly close up shots of the characters and
is difficult to see where exactly they are, the close up shots are mainly used
to show the happiness they feel together and how nothing around them matters to
them as long as they are together.
There is a shot where the camera zooms out from the old man
in the hospital, this shows his vulnerability and how the world around him is
so obvious now he is not with the one he loves.
Editing:
Quick cuts from the narrative and the artists singing.

Sound:

Theories:
Todorovs narrative theory states how all narratives share a
basic structure that involves a movement from one state of equilibrium to
another. This music video clearly follows this theory, the disequilibrium was
the woman dying and how it affected the man as he had lost the one he loved
however the equilibrium was that he was still with her mentally even though she
had gone physically it was not the end of their love as their love lives on.
Andrew Goodwins theory states that there are 5 key aspects
to a music video
1.Thought through beat (seeing what the lyrics
mean in your head.)
2.Relationship between the song and visuals.
3.Narrative and performance of the song.
4.Technological aspect of a music video.
5.Star image, lots of shots making him/her the
centre of attentions.
This music video follows a lot of these aspects. There are
multiple examples of when the song links with the visuals for example when he
sings “I wanna live with
you, Even when we're ghosts, 'Cause you were always there for me when I needed
you most” the visuals are of a man in hospital due to his wife just dying.
There
is also a lot of star image, most of the music video is of James Arthur singing
with his guitar, he is the centre of attention while the narrative runs
alongside it. This allows the audience to connect with the artist and feel the
same emotions as they are while singing it.
Locations: Rooftop, abandoned building, dark empty streets,
shop, Arcade, Mountains, River,
Due to the destroyed streets we can interpret that this song
and music video is about how Pompeii was destroyed by clouds of toxic gas and
hot volcanic ash in 79AD. If people in Pompeii had taken the warning and moved
away they would have been saved from the devastation of 79AD, but they didn’t,
they rebuilt on the rubble of the same situation. Similarly in our lives we
often don’t take the warnings of potential devastation from our “vices” (our
personality and characteristics equivalent to the underlying volcanic activity
of Pompeii) and build on the same rubble (staying in the same life situation)
while continuing our potentially destructive behaviour (our ‘sins’) the way to
save ourselves is to take the warnings and move away, sometimes in a
metaphorical sense or actually changing the way we live our life.
One of the most powerful lines of the song “where do we
begin? The rubble or our sins?” in other words do we just clean up and hide our
messes or do we dig for the root of the problem first? It seems to suggest that
the first option will lead to continued failure and an endless cycle of
destruction.
Props: Bike, drink
Clothing: Black t-shirt, brown leather jacket, black skinny
jeans, and black trainers.
All the clothing of the other characters are quite dark and
dull colours, fits with the theme of a sense of darkness in people lives and
their thoughts.
Camera:
Establishing shot of man on rooftop, zooms into him to show
how we as the audience are going to learn about this characters story of their
dark thoughts.
Long shot of man walking down multiple flights of stairs, it
shows how he is about to embark his journey and so are the audience.
Multiple long shots of the destroyed streets, this allows the
audience to establish the setting and get more of an idea of the meaning of the
song and music video.
Panning shot of man on his bike, this is showing how the
character is travelling through the streets of Pompeii after the devastation
and is trying to figure out how to pick up the ‘rubble’ of the city and his
life.
There are a lot of tacking shots that give the feel that the
audience is following behind the character and watching his journey happen
before them
The camera becomes very rough when the character is running
and it is like the audience are running away with him when he is running in the
music video.
Editing:
Quick cuts from the narrative and the artists singing.
Lip syncing to the song
Sound:
Bastille singing Pompeii
At the beginning there is a diegetic sound of the wind. It
is quite a calming noise, it could represent the calm before the storm.
Theories:
Todorovs narrative theory states how all narratives share a
basic structure that involves a movement from one state of equilibrium to
another. This theory does not link to this music video as there was no
equilibrium clear at the end of the music video or song, there was no solution.
The disequilibrium is the volcanic activity of 79AD and the deeper meaning of
people deciding between ‘rubble’ or our ‘sins.’
Locations: rooftop, street, Room where they are singing, old
fashioned buildings, underground (tube), bridge, sea (harbour), stage where
they are going to perform, train.
All of these locations are a narrative to the music video of
how they are lost without each other, as they are both walking round trying to
find each other and once they find each other they are at peace and are ready
to ‘perform’ together.
Props: bike
Clothing: when they are in a room singing there clothing
matches the colour of the wall this creates an aesthetic feel, they only used
the colours pastel pink and green which are quite soft colours.
Walking around the street:
Man: black jacket, white shirt, black jeans, black boots
Woman: Black long sleeve dress, white trainers, black hat
On Train:
Man: Striped t shirt, black jeans
Woman: black long sleeve top, flowery trousers, white
trainers
Camera:
Establishing shot of the sky, name of song and band come up
on screen.
Zoom in to man laying on rooftop- as we are moving
physically closer to him us as an audience will feel emotionally closer to him.
Zoom out of woman laying in the street- as we are moving
physically away from her we as an audience will feel emotionally distanced from
her.
This could also mean that he has more power than her and
that she is very vulnerable.
Medium close up of them singing, Woman is closer to the
camera, from the camera angle it looks like he is behind her. (Pink room)
Panning shot, close up of man when he is looking around
Long shot of woman when she is looking around
As an audience we still feel emotionally and physically
closer to the male and we have been very distanced from the woman so far.
There is another medium close up of them singing in a green
room this time the man is closer to the camera and from the camera angle is
looks like she is behind him this time.
There are a lot of tracking shots of them walking, they are
quite quick tracking shots, this shows the audience that the characters are in
a rush to get somewhere or there life is going by quickly as they are not with
each other and once they meet everything slows down like they are in there own
world.
Medium close up of the man and woman on a train at the end,
this suggests everything that just happened was a dream due to the fact they
run off at the end or it could be something that happened the night before they
are remembering.
Editing:
Quick cuts from the narrative and the artists singing.
Lip syncing to the song
Sound:
Oh wonder singing without you
Diegetic sound of the characters being on a train at the
end, marks the end of their journey/their dream.
Theories:
Todorovs narrative theory states how all narratives share a
basic structure that involves a movement from one state of equilibrium to
another. This is shown in this music video as at the beginning they do not know
where each other are and they are ‘lost’ without each other, the disequilibrium
was them not finding each other and the new equilibrium was when they finally
found each other and began their new journey (performing music together.)
In my music video I also want some way of including neon/fairy lights in a room, this would be for when the artist is doing a live performance, in between the narrative.
A lot of indie pop music videos have included neon lights and fairy lights in their music videos and is there for a common feature that I would also like to include.
The locations for my music video will mainly consist of a quiet road, forests and fields, from my research I found that these are the most common locations for an indie pop music video.
Write a song in about an hour.
Josephine writes some chords on piano, both contribute melody ideas and write lyrics together.
Recording process begins with a rough piano demo.
Both chip in with production ideas and collaborate on mixing the final track.
They do everything themselves.
Denim shorts, strappy/crop top, necklace and trainers is very common in indie pop music videos. It links with the "Male Gaze."
This is an aesthetic look that relates to my audience age group.
Another common style is a loose shirt paired with shorts and a belt.
I believe this style of clothing will go well with the male style I have chosen for my music video.
In my music video the female will be dressed quite similar to the images above as this is quite a stereotypical indie look for a female, i also think it will link well with the location ideas.
In my music video the boy will have wavy hair. Longer , messy hair for boys is very common in indie pop music videos and is a characteristic I want to incorporate into my music video.
I believe this hairstyle will give the audience the impression of the character I am intending but also create some mystery for them.
In my music video the girl will have loose French plaits, which will go well with her costume as well as helping to add to the image of the character.
The hairstyle illustrates what my focus group envisioned for this character.
Although this hairstyle is a simple look, the characteristics include a low budget and portray alternative styles compared to other genres. I believe this hairstyle will go well with the vibe and effect I am trying to achieve.
The loose French plaits give of a chill vibe and goes well with the indie pop style of not wearing high end products and being different and niche with their style.
